Russian Federation to build new missile systems after key nuclear treaty falls apart

The Russian military should start work on creating land-based launch systems for an existing ship-launched cruise missile, the Kalibr, and for longer-range hypersonic missiles which travel at least five times the speed of sound, he said.

Moscow denies flouting the 1987 pact.

European nations fear the treaty's collapse could lead to a new arms race with possibly a new generation of U.S. nuclear missiles stationed on the continent. Pompeo said the treaty will terminate if Russian Federation does not return in six months to "full and verifiable compliance with the treaty" by eliminating missiles Washington and NATO countries see as violating the agreement.

On Jan. 23, China Central Television aired footage deemed as showing the test launch of the latest DF26 intermediate-range missile. Such weapons were seen as particularly destabilising as they only take a few minutes to reach their targets, leaving no time for decision-makers and raising the likelihood of a global nuclear conflict over a false launch warning. "This is Russia's final opportunity to return to compliance", Wood warned.

It put an end to nuclear weapons testing in 1996 after a test in the South Pacific sparked outrage, and has since signed the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. A spokesman for President Putin said the United States failed to negotiate in good faith. The decision comes in response to the United States halting its participation in the agreement.

"They have announced they will conduct research and development, and we will act accordingly".

The INF agreement forbids ground-launched, short- and intermediate-range missiles, but not those launched from the air or sea - which Russian Federation already has.

However, Lavrov pivoted by claiming Washington had been violating the treaty since 2014.

When the INF was signed, Russian Federation and the US were the only two countries with mature intermediate-range nuclear capabilities.

Putin instructed the military to make sure the research and development works on new weapons don't swell military spending.

He said the USA "has fully adhered" to the treaty for more than 30 years, "but we will not remain constrained by its terms while Russian Federation misrepresents its actions". The United States intelligence community internally calls the missile the KY30 or the SSC-X-9 SKYFALL.

The defense minister said the plans had been approved by President Vladimir Putin. "In this situation, the Russian president has set the task for the Defense Ministry to take tit-for-tat mirrored measures", Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said Tuesday, according to Russia's Tass news agency.

Russia will give an adequate response to the USA withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty but will not shelve proposals aimed at stopping the arms race, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday. The reports are believed to be meant to restrain the U.S.by emphasizing the performance of the latest weapon. "Russia will not station intermediate-range weapons in Europe or other regions until similar USA weapons appear in those regions", he said.

Unfortunately, once one of history's most successful security agreements, now we must confront the fact that the Russian government has been cheating on this historic treaty: producing, flight-testing, and fielding exactly the type of missile that the INF Treaty prohibits.
