Teen who fled United Kingdom to join Islamic State wants to come home

Missing schoolgirls

Shamima Begum said she had seen two of her friends a fortnight ago, but it is not clear whether Amira Abase was one of them. "If you have supported terrorist organisations overseas I will not hesitate to prevent your return".

"I thought only of what he would have done to a Muslim woman if he had the chance", she said.

Sultana was reported to have died in an airstrike in Raqqa in 2016.

"We hope the British government will help us bring her home to us where she belongs". Another girl from the same school had run away the year before.

"She is the 15-year-old schoolgirl who was groomed and lured to the caliphate, and four years later, with that background, she is an indoctrinated jihadi bride".

"I could not endure the suffering and hardship that staying on the battlefield involved", the 19-year-old told the Times.

"I'm scared that this baby is going to get sick in this camp, that's why I really want to get back to Britain because I know it'll be looked after", she told The Times.

Back in 2015, Scotland Yard suggested that Begum and her fellow runaways would not face charges on terrorism, should they return.

Tasnime Akunjee, the lawyer representing the Begum family, told The Guardian that Shamima and her friends should be allowed repatriation, saying they "should be treated as victims as long as no evidence emerges that they committed offences".

"When there are ex-forces members who can't get re-homed and we welcome her back with open arms, no I don't think so".

Security Minister Ben Wallace said: "The UK advises against all travel to Syria and parts of Iraq".

"She said: "(These include) the physical security roles and related training that women have undertaken in IS-held territory, and the potential to transfer or apply these skills in other locations, or to pass these on to other people. including other women and their children".

She bragged about having a "mostly normal life" in Raqqa, Syria, despite the "bombing and stuff".

Shakil, who is from Birmingham, left the United Kingdom for Syria in 2014, where she sent messages to her family to tell them she wanted to die as a martyr.

Begum said that her friends, whose husbands have died, chose to stay behind in Baghouz.

She told him she had been married to a Dutch fighter and enjoyed a "normal" life, but he is said to have surrendered himself to Syrian fighters and she is believed to be a widow.

In an interview with the Times, Bangladeshi-British teenager Shamima Begum talked about seeing "beheaded heads" in bins, but said it "did not faze her".

"It was from a captured fighter killed on the battlefield, an enemy of Islam".

Anthony Loyd, the Times correspondent who tracked Begum down in a refugee camp in northern Syria, cautioned about judging her too quickly.

Speaking this morning to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Wallace insisted that British officials' lives wouldn't be risked to rescue the likes of Begum. Begum said that Abase, the other schoolgirl, may still be alive.

Islamic State has lost control of most of the territory it overran, including its strongholds of Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria.
