‘Endgame’ of Mueller Investigation ‘Is Near’

Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein to expected to leave DOJ in March

President Donald Trump on Tuesday nominated Jeffrey Rosen to be the next deputy attorney general.

Pressed on whether the full report should become public Mr Trump said it was "totally up to Mr Barr". And worse still, if the investigation only makes a brief summary public, that could actually be "counterproductive" to the president, because "it won't resolve anything".

Regardless of any completion date, what all agree is unknown is it is unknown if Mueller's report will be made public, or will even be sent to Congress.

When the special counsel brought the case against Roger Stone, a longtime adviser and friend to Trump, for lying to the FBI, attorneys from the USA attorney's office in Washington were assigned to it from the start - an indication that Mueller expects to hand off the investigation soon.

While Barr will be the main official overseeing Mueller's probe, Rosen will likely have a role in the investigation as well.

So far, 34 individuals and three companies have pleaded guilty, been indicted or otherwise swept up in the inquiry, including several former Trump advisers. Mueller has not accused anyone of colluding with Russian Federation.

President Trump reacted furiously to the interview, tweeting of "illegal and treasonous" behaviour and an "illegal coup attempt".

Rosen, now deputy secretary of the US Department of Transportation, would succeed Rod Rosenstein, who after the firing of the Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey appointed special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate possible ties between Russian Federation and Trump's campaign.

In the wake of Comey's firing, Deputy Attorney General Attorney General Rod Rosenstein chose Mueller as special counsel, in part to quell the burgeoning political crisis. "This man is a complete disaster", the president said. While the amendment has been invoked six times since its ratification in 1967, the specific section of the amendment purportedly discussed by top DOJ officials - which involves the majority of all Cabinet officers and the vice president agreeing that the president is "unable" to perform his job - has never been invoked.

Democrats have indicated they believe Mr Mueller should be asked to testify to Congress. He gave $7,545 to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney in 2012, and $100 to Senator Marco Rubio in 2015, a Trump rival for the GOP presidential nomination.
