Putin warns new missiles could target 'decision-making centers'

Putin focuses on social issues in state-of-the-nation speech

Trump said the USA would withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty within six months unless Russian Federation complies with the agreement.

The treaty, concluded by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, banned the development and deployment of land-based missiles with a range of 500-5,500km and was widely credited with banishing nuclear missiles from Europe. "So let them count the range of our missiles".

"Russia is not planning to be the first to deploy these missiles to Europe", said Putin in a nationwide televised speech at Russia's Federal Assembly.

"They will only take 10-12 minutes to reach Moscow", he said.

Russian Federation responded by pulling out as well, and both sides pointed fingers saying the other violated regulations under the treaty.

The announcement follows the U.S.' recent withdrawal from a key arms control pact.

Moscow will match any USA move to deploy new nuclear missiles closer to Russian Federation by stationing its own missiles closer to the United States or by deploying faster missiles or both, President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday (Feb 20). He said authorities should close 30 dump sites in big cities in the next two years.

Netanyahu and Putin, who have spoken by phone several times since the incident, met in Paris in November on the sidelines of World War I commemorations.

The first submarine equipped to carry the Poseidon will be commissioned later this year, Putin reported.

The Russian Defence Ministry has released a video showing a test of a new nuclear-powered underwater drone.

He also announced the coming deployment of the new Zircon hypersonic missile for the Russian navy, saying it's capable of flying at nine times the speed of sound and will have a range of 1,000km.

Putin added that the vehicle was "absolutely invulnerable to any air or missile defence system". In providing a reason for abandoning the agreement, Trump accused Moscow of violating the treaty with "impunity" by deploying banned missiles, while also saying that the USA would "move forward" with developing its own military response to Russia's deployment of banned cruise missiles that could target Western Europe.

He added that Russian Federation will be ready to engage in nuclear arms control talks with the United States when Washington is ready for that, but said Moscow will not initiate such negotiations.

"We don't want confrontation, particularly with such a global power as the USA", he said.

"In any case, we have not heard any statements proving the opposite, so this will dramatically escalate the situation in the field of global security and create serious threats to the Russian Federation", Putin said during his annual address to the Russian Federal Assembly, according to an UNIAN correspondent in Russia.
