No child should die from vaccine-preventable diseases - health experts

Anti-vaxers blamed for astonishing rise of Measles in 2018 – UNICEF

Around the same time measles cases have been rising nationwide, anti-vaccination groups have been vocal on Facebook, sharing and posting information against the safety of vaccines.

Although it was considered eliminated in the United States in 2000, the current outbreaks are largely linked to worldwide travelers bringing back the disease, which then spreads through pockets of unvaccinated people or communities, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More recently, before the modern measles vaccine was developed in 1963, more than 48,000 people were hospitalized-and around 500 people died-each year in the US alone. But the measles virus should not be underestimated, says Diane Peterson with the pro-vaccine Immunization Action Coalition.

According to analysis from the World Health Organization, which UNICEF drew on for its study, these are the increases in cases, between 2017 and 2018, in the ten countries with the highest jump in measles.

A single yeshiva in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn produced 21 of the 31 new cases of measles in Orthodox schools in February, 2019, NY health officials said on Thursday.

PETERSON: It's spreading fast because we have pockets of children that have not been vaccinated mostly due to their parents' decision not to vaccinate them so that it can spread quickly among unvaccinated children.

Washington and OR are among 10 states to confirm cases of measles in 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "Even though I was very young when that happened, I still remember. the heart-shaking chills, the muscle pain, and the rash that's [emblematic] of measles".

The CDC reports the best way to protect against measles is to get the MMR shot and that doctors recommend all children get it. This can cause seizures, deafness, and permanent brain damage and disability, says Dr. Murphy.

Deaths from measles in the USA are rare.

"If the current rate continued for the rest of this year, our country will have seen nearly 1,000 cases", Grosso said.

Montana: Three cases of mumps are confirmed in children attending Bozeman public schools, and health officials are investigating other possible cases.

There is no cure for measles, but medical care help reduce fever and inflammation, and ensure that a patient is getting enough fluids and nutrition. "They are best protected by vaccinating those around them who can be".

The federal government's Vaccines for Children (VFC) program is a "critical component" of the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases, Messonnier said. A suggestion that immunization might be tied to severe consequences like autism was debunked years ago, after findings supporting that link were proved fraudulent. Children should get two doses of the MMR vaccine - this is about 97% effective at preventing measles - according to recommendations made by the CDC. "This slide is really unacceptable; this is a totally vaccine-preventable disease".
