US lawmakers to demand documents in sweeping Trump probe

House Judiciary Committee to request documents from dozens including Donald Trump Jr. to begin investigation into obstruction of justice

"We are going to initiate investigations into abuses of power, into corruption. and into obstruction of justice", Nadler said.

Nadler went on to say that he would not open impeachment proceedings at this juncture.

"I am an innocent man being persecuted by some very bad, conflicted (and) corrupt people in a witch hunt that is illegal (and) should never have been allowed to start", Trump added.

"It's very clear that the Ppresident obstructed justice", Mr Nadler said. We may or may not get there.

In that case, Nadler said, "we will subpoena, we will do whatever we have to do".

Only two USA presidents - Andrew Johnson (1868) and Bill Clinton (1998) - have been impeached in the 242-year history of the American Republic.

But Cohen's hearing before the House Judiciary Committee last week piqued congressional Democrats' interest in hearing from Weisselberg, as Cohen said the Trump Organization official had insight into Trump's tax filings.

Nadler also said that officials who are now serving or who have previously worked in the White House and the Department of Justice for the administration will be asked to provide information to the committee.

As evidence of obstruction, Nadler cited Trump's May 2017 firing of FBI Director James Comey, who was leading an investigation into Russian Federation activities in the 2016 USA presidential election and possible collusion with Trump's campaign.

"We would want to see the evidence behind that and see the validity of that, we could agree or disagree".

As special counsel Robert Mueller wraps up his Russian Federation probe, federal investigators have focused on conflicting public statements by President Trump and his team that could be seen as an effort to influence witnesses and obstruct justice, people familiar with the investigation told CNN.

Democrats in the United States House of Representatives announced their intention on Sunday to begin collecting documents and other evidence as part of an investigation that could ultimately lead to the impeachment of US president Donald Trump.

Nadler said the committee on Monday would release the list of people and organizations it would be requesting documents from.

Several Democratic representatives have called for impeaching Trump, even introducing articles of impeachment on multiple occasions.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) annual meeting at National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland, U.S., March 2, 2019. He also named the president's son, Donald Trump Jr.

Trump's former personal attorney Michael Cohen testified on Capitol Hill Wednesday that authorities in NY were probing crimes allegedly involving the president beyond those that have been made public.

"Yeah, it is a high bar", Mr. Nadler said. "I still don't know, they don't have to tell me, but I still don't know whether anyone in the Trump administration at the most senior levels ever got a read out".
