Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational with what he describes as a neck strain.

Tiger Woods set golf's alarm bells ringing on Monday night by pulling out of this week's PGA Tour event with a neck injury.

He hopes to return to action at the Players Championship at Sawgrass, Florida, on 14 March.

"Unfortunately due to a neck strain that I've had for a few weeks, I'm forced to withdraw from the API", Woods wrote on Twitter. He says he's been receiving treatment.

McIlroy added that he isn't overly anxious about Woods' health and in the tweet sent on Monday Woods said, "My lower back is fine, and I have no long-term concerns, and I hope to be ready for The Players [next week]".

Woods added that he would send his regrets for missing one of his favorite tournaments, at Bay Hill Club & Lodge, to Palmer's family.

Woods, ranked 12th in the world, played a full schedule a year ago for the first time since 2015, which came after the first of what would turn out to be four back procedures.

Day, who has suffered with numerous back injuries before, began his day on the back nine but after hitting his second shot on the 16th hole decided he couldn't continue. "I'd have to either just fall to the floor or just stay in bed". He also played in the Ryder Cup as well as the Hero World Challenge in December.

He scored his first victory in five years in September 2018 when he finished the Atlanta tournament with a two-stroke win over Billy Horschel.

Tiger won last year's Tour Championship for his 80th PGA Tour title.
