Actresses Huffman and Loughlin charged in college bribery case

Huffman was released from custody on bail

She is expected to appear in a Boston courtroom March 29 to address the charges.

Huffman allegedly made a $15,000 donation to the Key World Foundation, a charity organization run by William Singer, which allegedly served as a front for a college admissions bribery scheme.

The whereabouts of Full House star Lori Loughlin, who was also charged along with her husband, and fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, are not clear.

The "Shameless" star turned 69 years old Wednesday, only one day after his wife Felicity Huffman was charged for her alleged role in a nationwide college admissions scam.

A magistrate judge in Los Angeles set a $1 million (€880,000) bond for Mr Giannulli. Others appeared in courts in Boston, New York, Connecticut and elsewhere.

"I don't believe that the large contributions are getting people in", said Michael London, a co-author of "The New Rules of College Admissions".

USC's interim President Wanda Austin said about a half-dozen current applicants affiliated with Singer's firm will be barred from admission, The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

He's accused of spearheading the scam, including allegedly facilitating cheating on college entrance exams like the SAT and ACT, Photoshopping prospects' heads on athletes' bodies, and bribing admissions officers.

Authorities say the consulting company also bribed administrators of college entrance exams to allow a Florida man to take the tests on behalf of students or replace their answers with his.

Huffman, long a co-star on ABC's "Desperate Housewives" series, was allegedly part of a scam in which more than 40 defendants paid up to $6 million in bribes to make sure their children were accepted to elite schools such as Yale, Stanford and Wake Forest Universities.

Federal court records unsealed Tuesday in Boston name 50 people, including Huffman and Fuller House actress Lori Loughlin, who have been indicted as part of the alleged nationwide scheme, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in MA. A former Yale soccer coach reportedly pleaded guilty and helped build the case against others. Authorities said in many cases the students were not aware of the fraud.

The Justice Department has published the full list of those who have been indicted on charges ranging from conspiracy to commit racketeering to mail fraud and obstruction of justice.

None of the students were charged and most remain at the universities, he said.

Official say they have emails from Loughlin. She allegedly discussed doing the same thing for her youngest daughter, though the documents show Huffman didn't go through with it.

Singer ended up cooperating with investigators a year ago, helping them record incriminating conversations he had with Loughlin, Henriquez and other parents.

"Federal charges are always serious and unlike state court, they don't charge people unless they have a very strong case", Martin continued.
