Borough MP resigns junior shadow minister role over Brexit second referendum vote

About time Theresa May laughs as she finally secures a victory

PM Theresa May leaves 10 Downing Street ahead of the vote on delaying Brexit.

Thursday night, the British MPs also overwhelmingly rejected, by 334 votes to 85, an amendment presented by Sarah Wollaston, the Independent Group, proposing the organization of a second referendum on Brexit.

If MPs refuse to accept the deal on the table, or if the European Union grant a longer extension, then the Prime Minister can negotiate an entirely new deal.

The amendment with the best chance of passing is the backbenchers' proposal submitted by Labour's Hilary Benn and supported by his fellow Labour MP Yvette Cooper plus seven others including the Conservatives Oliver Letwin and Dominic Grieve. May had to rely on Labour and other opposition votes to get it through.

Shadow housing minister Yvonne Fovargue, shadow education minister Emma Lewell-Buck, shadow business minister Justin Madders, Ruth Smeeth, a shadow ministerial aide, and Labour whip Stephanie Peacock, all resigned to oppose one.

British lawmakers faced another tumultuous day Thursday, as Parliament prepared to vote on whether to request a delay to the country's scheduled departure from the European Union and Prime Minister Theresa May struggled to shore up her shattered authority.

The original government vote tonight was meant to give MPs a chance to delay Brexit - with some reports that Article 50 could be extended for as long as two years.

"If she can deliver those three things then it might scrape through, but it's a hell of a big mountain to climb".

She told BBC Radio 4's Political Thinking with Nick Robinson podcast: "The element now is that people will have to take a bad deal rather than no deal".

If her deal is rejected for a third time and is not approved by Wednesday, the government will ask for a longer extension. May's decision to offer a free vote on an issue where there are "strong views on all sides of the debate". They wanted a series of different Brexit options (soft Brexit, hard Brexit etc.) to be put before MPs in what's known as "indicative votes". "As a delay was passed by Parliament, I want to see deal agreed ASAP so we can minimize to short, technical, extension".

The DUP's Westminster leader, Nigel Dodds, said discussions were "friendly and constructive" at a Cabinet Office summit with Cabinet ministers, including May's de-facto deputy David Lidington, the Environment Secretary Michael Gove and the Chancellor Philip Hammond, sparking speculation that a financial incentive for Northern Ireland could be part of the negotiations.

Lawmakers voted against the deal for a second time on Tuesday but then voted against leaving the European Union without a deal on Wednesday.

May has made clear that she will press her deal to a third "meaningful vote" in the Commons by March 20 in the hope of securing the support of MPs who rejected it by 230 votes in January and 149 earlier this week.

It revealed that leader Jeremy Corbyn and senior aides have met with backbenchers Peter Kyle and Phil Wilson, who are promoting a plan to accept Mrs May's deal on the condition that it is subject to a second referendum. That left Britain facing a disruptive "no-deal" exit from the bloc on March 29, when a two-year countdown to the country's departure runs out.

Labour whipped its MPs to abstain on the referendum vote, but 24 voted in favour - not including Brighton's Lloyd Russell-Moyle, who went through both lobbies to cancel his own vote out. To take no deal off the table, it is not enough to vote against no deal - you have to agree to a deal.
