May-Corbyn Brexit talks described as constructive, but no breakthrough

It could, however, present a long extension on a take-it-or-leave-it basis, leaving the British government with the option of leaving on 12 April without a deal - or signing up to a delay to Brexit of at least nine months and, more likely, a year or longer.

Corbyn also said he would hold a vote of no-confidence in May's government in reserve should an exit deal fail to achieve majority support in Parliament, reported Reuters.

In a move created to commit Jeremy Corbyn to demanding a vote, Labour's shadow foreign minister Emily Thornberry wrote to party colleagues on Thursday insisting that the party mustn't agree to any deal without a referendum attached, saying: "Any deal agreed by Parliament must be subject to a confirmatory public vote, and yes, the other option on the ballot must be Remain".

The bill, which would require May to bring a motion to delay the date of Brexit, now needs to be approved by the upper house, the House of Lords.

May has launched discussions with the largest opposition Labour Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn, in a bid to break the impasse.

The UK has until April 12 to propose a new plan to the EU, which the Union can also accept, or leave without a deal.

But they're fraught with danger for the premier, who suffered two ministerial resignations Wednesday over her outreach to the "Marxist" Labour leader.

Theresa May made "an about-face" in her Brexit strategy on Tuesday by offering to work with the Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, an approach that could lead to a closer relationship with the European Union, say Max Colchester and Jason Douglas in The Wall Street Journal.

But increasingly weary European Union leaders - exhausted of Britain's political drama and eager to focus on Europe's own problems - want to see either a done deal or a new way forward from May before they all meet in Brussels on Wednesday.

Mrs May replied that "I do not think the Labour Party should be in Government", adding that after the Salisbury poison attack, Mr Corbyn "said he preferred to believe Vladimir Putin than our own security agencies".

Backbench Labour MPs have warned Jeremy Corbyn not to include a second Brexit referendum in any compromise deal with Theresa May.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was in Dublin on Thursday for Brexit talks with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.

Following a "marathon" seven-hour cabinet meeting, May outlined plans to request a further extension to Article 50, ideally not beyond 22 May to avoid the United Kingdom having to take part in European elections.

May and Corbyn are expected to initiate talks on Brexit on Wednesday.

Parliament has voted repeatedly to rule out a "no-deal" Brexit - most recently on Wednesday, when the House of Commons passed a bill that forces the government to ask for a delay to Britain's exit rather than crash out. Prime Minister Theresa May put the draft Brexit deal reached with the European Union to a vote three times in the House of Commons, but it was rejected each time.

Shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer confirmed the idea of a confirmatory referendum would be discussed in the second round of talks.

"We are now in a really risky situation with a serious and growing risk of no deal", Labour Party legislator Yvette Cooper said.

A Brexit-related vote in Britain's House of Commons on Wednesday ended in a tie, the first time that has happened in a quarter-century.

Two junior ministers have resigned, and more could follow. "We recognize that she has made a move".

But 25 Labour lawmakers warned Corbyn in a letter that support for a referendum would "reduce our chances of winning a general election".
