Boeing Takes Full Responsibility For Two Plane Crashes That Killed 360 People

Family Of American Woman Killed In Ethiopian 737 Max Crash Sues Boeing

But most are Max planes. Instead, a computer was getting erroneous readings from a sensor mounted like a weather vane on the jet's nose.

Scrutiny has centred on an anti-stall system, developed specifically for the latest versions of the planes, that has given pilots problems. The FAA is responsible for regulating aviation in the USA and operating the nation's air traffic control system. It also noted that the accident is still being investigated.

A statement from Ethiopian Airlines on Thursday said the report "clearly showed" that the pilots were in "full compliance" with proper emergency procedures. "That is extremely curious".

Ethiopian Airlines had on Thursday disclosed in its preliminary report, that the pilots of the ill-fated aircraft followed instructions that Boeing recommended and FAA approved emergency procedures to handle the most hard emergency situation created on the airplane.

It recommended that Boeing review its flight-control systems and that regulators properly verify the review.

The Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, Mr Tewolde GebreMariam, was quoted to have said the airline was still going through deep mourning for the loss of loved ones. The New York Times, among others, have reported that the practice of selling fundamental features like communication, navigation or safety systems as "add-ons" is rife in the airline industry.

Ethiopian safety officials stopped short of saying the plane needs a redesign.

"This should not happen to anyone again and that's why we're here", said Michael Stumo, Samya's father.

Nearly immediately, a device called a stick shaker began vibrating the captain's control column, warning him that the plane might be about to stall and fall from the sky. The company is redesigning its software and expects to complete the work within weeks.

Boeing is working on a software upgrade for the maneuvering system MCAS, as well as training courses for 737 MAX pilots.

The Chicago-based planemaker blamed the accident on "a chain of events" and acknowledged the sensor malfunction.

The report, published by the by the Ethiopian Accident Investigation Bureau, suggested the Boeing 737 Max involved nosedived several times before it came down last month.

But the report says "the throttles did not move", without elaborating.

A grand jury convened by USA prosecutors last month subpoenaed a former Boeing engineer demanding he provide testimony and documents related to the 737 Max.

Shortly after liftoff, the value of the left angle of attack sensor deviated from the right one and reached 74.5 degrees while the right angle of attack sensor value was 15.3 degrees; then after; the stick shaker activated and remained active until near the end of the flight.

The March 10 disaster, and parallels with another 737 Max crash in Indonesia last October in which 189 people died, has led to the worldwide grounding of Boeing's flagship model. Aboulafia speaks on "Bloomberg Daybreak: Australia". As pilots have told us, the erroneous activation of the MCAS function can add to what is already a high-workload environment.

"Safety is our responsibility, and we own it".
