Theresa May Urges Corbyn to Agree to Brexit Deal in Op-Ed

Local elections

The concessions will include a comprehensive but temporary customs arrangement with the European Union lasting until the next general election, the Times said, citing a source involved in the talks.

"We can not go on like this, the only way we will leave the European Union realistically is with a leader who actually believes in it", Mr Francois told LBC radio.

Separately, British aid minister Rory Stewart said on Sunday the government and the Labour Party agreed on nearly everything about arrangements for Brexit, and that a deal would be easy to do if its leader Jeremy Corbyn wanted one.

Prime Minister Theresa May could reach a Brexit deal with the opposition Labour Party within days, a leading Conservative Party figure said on Saturday, after senior ministers urged compromise following poor local election results.

She wrote in Mail on Sunday: "To the leader of the opposition, I say this: let's listen to what the voters said in the elections and put our differences aside for a moment".

"We have to make a change", he said speaking on the leadership of the Conservative party.

"At that point Labour could use their manifesto to argue for a softer Brexit if they wanted to and a new Conservative prime minister could argue for a harder Brexit", a source cited by the Sunday Times said. "Let's do a deal".

The hardcore eurosceptic called May a "caretaker prime minister", telling LBC radio that making fundamental decisions about Brexit under her leadership would therefore be "a big mistake".

And asked on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show if he trusted Mrs May, Mr McDonnell replied: "No, sorry, not after this weekend when she's blown the confidentiality I had and I actually think she's jeopardised the negotiations for her own personal protection".

Mr McDonnell also said it "may well" be the case that any deal would have to be voted on in a second referendum, adding: "I think the Conservatives have to recognise that if a deal is going to go through there might be a large number of MPs who will want a public vote".

Earlier, shadow health secretary Jon Ashworth said it was "disappointing" that it appeared Tory ministers and spin doctors had been "briefing about what's happening" in the talks.

Labour and the Conservatives would then leave open whether this would lead in future to Labour's preferred customs union, with EU consultation rights, or the looser arrangement favoured by the Conservatives.

And he said: "We are negotiating with Theresa May's team as requested".

The threat of an imminent challenge to Mrs May's position as Conservative leader was lifted last month when the 1922 Committee's executive rejected calls to change party rules which protect her from a no-confidence vote until December.

"The very worst thing we could do at this time is a Westminster stitch-up, whether over the PM's deal or another deal".

On the other side of the Brexit divide, the Observer newspaper reported that scores of Labour lawmakers had written to May and Corbyn to insist on a second Brexit referendum on any deal agreed.
