Trump order clears way for barring Huawei from USA telecommunications networks

Donald Trump to issue order effectively blocking Huawei from US

According to Reuters, the usa will likely soon tighten restrictions against Huawei as President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order barring United States companies from using telecoms equipment from Huawei or any other company that poses a threat to national security.

The issue has taken on new urgency as US wireless carriers look for partners as they rollout 5G networks.

David Wang, Huawei's executive director, said on Wednesday that new USA restrictions on market access will have little impact on the tech giant's business prospects.

Requests for comment from Huawei and a group representing small carriers, the Competitive Carriers Association, were not immediately returned. Diplomats pressing allies to bar Huawei from 5G networks have said the company is subject to Chinese law that demands cooperation with security services, raising the specter of espionage.

The new order, if enacted, won't change much for big wireless carriers, which aren't using Huawei equipment, Reuters says. USA lawmakers are concerned because, under China's communist regime, Huawei could be called upon to gather intelligence from consumers and corporations around the world.

The order authorizes the government to block transactions of communications technologies built by firms controlled by a foreign adversary that puts USA security at "unacceptable" risk, The Washington Post reported.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that Trump was expected to sign his long-awaited executive order this week.

The U.S. fears the Chinese government will use its power and ties to snoop on American interests through the gear, a charge the company has denied. An administration official insisted in a conference call with reporters on Wednesday that the order wasn't aimed specifically at China.

A Chinese company closely associated with Beijing said Tuesday it would sign a no-spy agreement with other countries to allay USA fears that the company conducts espionage for the Chinese government, Reuters reported. Obtaining such licenses will be hard because they will have to show the transfer of items will not harm US national security, said John Larkin, a former export control officer in Beijing for the Commerce Department.

The association has about 60 members, none with more than 100,000 customers, although many are crucial partners for the nation's four major operators, providing coverage in remote locations through roaming agreements.

In January, US prosecutors said Huawei had conspired to steal T-Mobile trade secrets, and also charged Huawei and its chief financial officer with bank and wire fraud on allegations that the company violated sanctions against Iran. The US is seeking to extradite her.
